Understanding Families
In order to understand an individual, we must first learn about their family dynamics. What is the true definition of a family? A family is two or more people who regard themselves as a family and who perform some of the functions that families typically perform. These people may or may not be related by blood or marriage and may not live together (pg.270).
The nuclear family is known as the traditional family, but that has became a dying concept as more "non-traditional" families are coming to surface. There are many different types of families that make up the family dynamics of today. These dynamics greatly impact the behavior and academic involvement in the classroom.
The family system theory is a theory of human behavior that uses the family as the main focal point. This theory is very important for professionals to understand as it describes reasons why some behaviors may exists. The family life cycle explains the cycles that parents with children with disabilities may encounter as their child continues to grow. It is very important for educators to know and understand these stages so that they can be of assistance to the families.
